Collection Recollection - A Cookie Jar Exhibition

A long, long time ago, in the early 1900s, Medalta was a bustling factory where cookie jars (amongst many other wares) were made. These jars found their way into homes across the country, filled with the comforting aroma of home-baked cookies. It was a magical era, one that still lingers in the collective memory.

Now, a century later, artist Elaine Zimmer revisits, reviews, redirects, and condenses the classical urn form of the Medalta cookie jar. Her reimagined creations are small, intimate porcelain jars that fit in the palm of your hand. These new forms are playful, toy-like, and echo the original Medalta cookie jars, resonating with the nostalgia of the past. Alongside Zimmer’s contemporary pieces, the show will also feature original Medalta cookie jars from our collection, offering a unique juxtaposition between the historic and the contemporary.

Zimmer’s jars tell a story; they are keepsakes. These reimagined cookie jars become treasures, their surfaces treated in the manner of naïve or folk art. Each jar is decorated with intent, a collaboration of materials, and a collection of memories. They are covered with pictures, words, stories, old-fashioned sayings, and recurring motifs from Elaine's artistic practice.

Join us to celebrate the legacy and modern reinterpretation of the Medalta cookie jar. Meet the artist, Elaine Zimmer, and explore her delightful creations that bridge the past and present with charm and creativity.

Medicine Hat Police Commission

The Medicine Hat Police Commission typically holds open public meetings on the third Wednesday of each month starting at 6:00 PM. The meetings will also be live-streamed.

To enhance transparency and accountability to the citizens of Medicine Hat, the Police Commission welcomes members of the public to attend the Open meetings to hear updates on policing activities and matters concerning community safety.

There is a standing “public consultation” opportunity on the agenda of the open meeting for members of the community to provide their input to the Commission about policing in the community or to ask a question.

During the Public Consultation portion of the meeting agenda, citizens may pose questions or provide brief comments to the Commission directly.  Any questions forwarded to the Commission by the Friday preceding the meeting date will be addressed by the Commission during the Public Consultation session.  Questions from citizens in attendance that were not forwarded in advance will be allowed, however, responses may be deferred to a later date.

Questions from the public can be forwarded to the Chair of the Police Commission, Ms. Sarah Scahill, at sarah.scahill@mhpc.ca (email) or 403-502-8908 (phone). The written option is preferred as it provides the Police Commission ample time to research the question or concern to provide an informed response.

Please note that complaints about officer conduct and MHPS policies are not topics for this forum as there is a process under the Alberta Police Act for such matters.

Ongoing investigations and personnel matters are not to be discussed in Open Meetings as per the provisions set out in the Alberta Police Act.

Mike Dambra Live in Medicine Hat

End Time Estimated

Mike Dambra established himself as a comedic force in 1987, kicking off a career to be reckoned with that now spans over three decades in the business. Hailing from Rochester, New York, and now stirring up laughs in the chilly embrace of Edmonton, Alberta, he's been the talk of many towns across the US and Canada.

They call him the "Smartass King of Comedy," and for good reason. Mike's unique concoction of wit, charm, and irreverence is as rare as a sober clown at a wine tasting. He's a master of adaptability, effortlessly turning any crowd into putty in his hands, and leaving them begging for more.

Each performance is a rollercoaster of unpredictability, ensuring that no two shows are ever the same—much to the delight (and sometimes terror) of his adoring fans. Mike's interactive style keeps audiences guessing. They keep coming back for more, probably because they never know what fresh hell he'll unleash on stage next.

Having shared the spotlight with legends like Russell Peters, Howie Mandel, Adam Sandler, and Chris Rock - Mike's been there, done that, and made the audience snort with laughter while doing it. He's even rubbed elbows with music icons Foreigner, Michael Bolton and Joan Jett. Not bad for a guy from Rochester, huh? Mike's got the resume to make you snort with laughter. So, grab a front-row seat if you dare. Just don't say we didn't warn you.

But Mike's ascent to comedic success didn't come without its fair share of pomp and circumstance. In 1987 he snagged the "Funniest Person In Rochester” title, launching him into the stratosphere of local news fame, dozens of free drinks at the local pubs, and industry attention. Then he won the title again a decade later in 1997, locking in his staying power like a badass.

Whether he's shooting punchlines like a comedy gunslinger or engaging in impromptu banter with the masses, Mike Dambra's performances are more than just entertainment—they're a unique experience. With rave reviews trailing behind him as he continuously tours, Mike continues to stake his name as a true master of the craft.

So buckle up, folks. The Mike Dambra comedy train is rolling into town, and you won't want to miss it. Catch him live and join the ranks of his loyal fans who can't get enough of his sharp-tongued humor.

Hotel California - The Original Eagles Tribute

Wonder Women - Celebrating the Music and Stories of Female Composers

Why hurry over beautiful things? Why not linger and enjoy them?” So pondered Clara Schumann, remembered as one of the finest pianists of all time.

In “Wonder Women!”, pianist Sarah Hagen delves into the remarkable stories and piano music of forgotten female composers from the classical repertoire. This recital will highlight piano works by 18th and 19th century composers, including Clara Schumann, Cécile Chaminade, Delphine von Schauroth, and others. Included will be stunningly gorgeous music by Marianna Martines, who lived in the same circles as Haydn and Mozart, and often joined Mozart in piano duets at the musical soirées she and her sister held in their Viennese home.

A note from the performer:
I began performing this programme after purchasing a disappointingly thin volume of music by female composers about 20 years ago. After reading through the music, I remember shutting the book and thinking to myself, “There must be more music than this, and certainly more music of a better quality!”. I simply didn’t feel the collection fairly represented the music that had been created by women during the 18th and 19th centuries. So, I set off on a musical treasure hunt, searching online, through old collections of music, and in libraries. I have found that good music is getting easier to find as scholars take more of an interest in researching these remarkable women. So, I am constantly refreshing the programme!

I am also continually fascinated by the stories of the strong women behind the music. These are the women who fought for equal pay as their male colleagues, who insisted that they could also have a life and a career outside of the kitchen, who chose to shockingly forgo marriage to be able to fully focus on their art. These are the trailblazers who are an invaluable part of our journey to gender equality.

Get your tickets for only $37.50 all-in. Get an even better price when you buy the whole On-Stage Bundle! The bundle price is only $31.50 per show! No hidden fee.

Morgan Klaiber

Morgan Klaiber

End Time Estimated

Raised in the cottonwood desert of Southern Alberta, Morgan embodies everything it means to be a country loving cowgirl in both her music and day to day life. Growing up on the ranch with singer/songwriter Reese Klaiber for a father, her passion for music was instilled at a very young age. The importance of storytelling and music has always been an important part of the cowboy culture and the two are heavily intertwined for her watching Reese write his songs from the back of the horse and seat of the tractor. This ultimately paved the way for her to wear her heart on her sleeve as she began pursuing her own independent career. She now sings her lungs out about her own life’s adventures with her heartfelt writing style and upbeat attitude. Her authenticity and honesty stem from the realities of life as a rancher and being a hardworking female in an old boy’s world. Her powerful, resonant voice paired with her approachable lyrics earns her rapport with every show she plays. Many genres and artists have influenced her style, and although a country artist through and through, she includes these influences along with her country western roots to create the sound and energy you feel and hear as Morgan Klaiber.

Singing harmonies came as naturally as the rhythm did and her performance career began at a very young age alongside Reese. In later years she became a member of the Reese Klaiber Band performing rodeos and festivals as well as opening for Travis Tritt at a local show. She then began branching out on her own as the lead singer of her rock band project, Stolen Horse. Stepping into the genre gave her even more vocal confidence as she learned to really let her hair down and captivate audiences with powerful rockstar vocal notes. The combination of covering songs by bands such as Heart, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and many other classic rock artists, alongside an experienced band of players, earned the group a spot opening for Alberta Legend, Paul Brandt, when his show came to town. But upon moving back to the family ranch, she got together with her old friends back home and became a member of the local country band, Fox and the Hounds. They began making waves covering a wide variety of popular and nostalgic country music, in which Morgan felt it was the right fit to start playing her original work with.

In November, with the help of her down home proper country band, Morgan was awarded the title of the 2023 Ranchman’s Rising Star, which she feels has been one of her most joyous music accomplishments to date. After playing for many years individually, alongside her dad, and with various cover groups, she is now bringing her own music to the table heading for bigger stages, such as Country Thunder Alberta in August 2024. When she’s not belting it out on stage, or singing her favourite songs around the campfire, you’ll find her back home on the family ranch with her dirty boots and hat on, living through another day’s adventure that she might even write a song about.

Opening Reception for Collection Recollection - A Cookie Jar Exhibition

End time Estimated

BIO

K-os is a rapper, singer and songwriter hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Canada who was born on February 20th, 1972. Since debuting in 1993 he has released five studio albums and become one of the most acclaimed and respected Canadian rappers of all time. While many rappers point to hearing N.W.A for the first time as their formative musical experience, or owe their entire career to Nas, but far more of them than one might expect have a voracious appetite for all kinds of music, and nowhere is this more apparent than in Kevin Brereton.

Brereton grew up enamored with Slick Rick and A Tribe Called Quest, but was also a devoted fan of New Order, Depeche Mode, The Beatles and RX Bandits, and all of them would go on to deeply influence his music when he debuted as k-os in 1993.

Thanks to a grant by the MuchFACT foundation, Brereton was able to release his first single “Musical Essence” independently, which was a big success around his native Canada. In 1995. Brereton was invited to join that year's Hip-Hop Explosion Tour, sharing the stage with Rascalz and Ghetto Concept. Off the back of this tour Brereton would meet Raphael Saadiq, with whom he would partner up to record his debut album “Missing Links”. He finished the album, and even got an offer for a record deal from BMG after the release of his second single “Rise Like The Sun”. However, it was at that point that Brereton decided to withdraw from the music industry indefinitely, completely demoralized by its politics and dissatisfied with his own output. At the time, he was living with his manager in Los Angeles, California, but was invited back to Vancouver, Canada by Red1, of the aforementioned Rascalz.

While he was there, the band convinced him to guest on their album “Global Warning”, and after much convincing, agreed to do it. By the time of their album's release in 1999, Brereton had regained his confidence and was back making music again, making his live debut in the same year.

k-os's debut album “Exit” came out in 2002 on Astralwerks and was an enormous critical hit that was hailed as one of the finest hip-hop records to ever come from Canada. It wasn't a huge commercial success, but by 2003, it was being nominated for Juno's, Grammy's and Source awards, securing Brereton's future as a force to be reckoned with in hip-hop.

To this day, k-os remains a rapper who commands the kind of respect reserved for true icons of the genre, and while he might not have the sales certificates that they have, his music is still just as, if not more vital, and truly important, as any rapper who's ever gone Platinum. For that, he comes highly recommended.
